Poems A-Z Indigo

Indigo, indigo the richer side of blue

The earth as seen from outer space, or deepest ocean hue

Not quite the brightest violet… but royal nonetheless

So calming and so soothing too, a harsh tone to regress

Not like its cousin red, the sun to represent

Nor like the greenest rolling hill, the tint of grassy bed

The flowers waving from the pot, are yellow orange and pink

Important true for sure each one, at least that’s what they think

But indigo’s the quiet one, with deep and subtle tone

So rich in depth and purple haze, it proudly stands alone

David Kettler, 4/1/09

I really like the color of indigo now that I’ve checked it out and wrote a poem about it. It reminds me of a very classy, royal type of color. I liked the idea of individualizing it rather than having it grouped in with blue or purple.

I am preparing a book about colour and light and would like to use your poem, Indigo, in it. Would this be OK?

Hello David!,
I discovered your "Indigo" poem whilst helping my 5 year old daughter make her New Orleans Mardi Gras shoebox float.. As we had a lot of indigo paint that I mixed (and didn't want to waste) we decided to make an indigo float. I thought of using a poem that included the color Indigo, did a google search, and voila, I found your poem! As I see someone else used your poem already (and I will include your name on the float under the poem), I will let you know how your poem is appreciated. I wish I could give more gratuity, but the float prizes are probably not that expensive!

Thanks Kathryn! I wrote this many years ago and haven't really thought about it for a while. It's so cool to get a response like yours and re-read what I have wrote! I'm almost ready to assemble my second book of poetry. I have one book of poetry available on Amazon called My Reasons in Rhyme...poetry by David Kettler.

Having an undergraduate degree in English and Humanities, I love placing a poem in my Thank You Notes. I came across your poem while writing a note of thanks to the Book Club leader for gifting the members an Indigo scarf at the end of our discussion of the book, "The Indigo Girl." Love your paean to the royalty of the color blue as it is in only indigo blue.
