Week #39 Brenda's birthday poem

1/20/2018

The sun holds no candle
To your morning smile
You light my day
You always have
You light my life
You spark my flame
Not in what’s new…
…but what’s the same
What a journey
With you my dove
All my heart…
…all my love

Week #38  Squeaky Wheel

1/12/2018

Squeaky wheel gets the grease
Forgiving heart beats in peace
Crying baby to the breast
Mother always knows what’s best

Fleeting thoughts a flock of birds
Giving wings to weighty words
Seeking rest and finding none
When contemplation is all done

Spinning globe that we are on
This comet blue around the sun
Hanging on for our dear life
Until the spinning ride is done

Flock of birds are lifting off
Rush of wind beneath the wings
All conforming to the plan
Voicing noise and other things

This squeaky wheel is spinning slow
Mama’s lap is gone I know
Birds have flown the air is still
Round and round and round I go

Week#37 Simple Message

1/3/2018

A sower went forth to sow
The greatest story ever told
No simpler message said or wrote
Spoken plain from a little boat
He could have walked on the water
To give this profound proclaim
Drawing attention to Himself
was not His goal or aim
The power is in the message
 The seed planted within
Something that never leaves us
Fruit that comes from Him
So humbly He boarded a little boat
Pushed it out a bit
Amplified His voice
From the water where He sit
Proclaimed the message
A sower went out to sow
Solidifying the chance for us
Eternal life to know
The more we make it about ourselves
The less people see of Him
The life is in the message
When we let the work begin

Week#36 Enya sings Silent Night  & Fireplace Waltz

12/27/2017

These are older poems from my book..."My Reasons in Rhyme"  Love how they make me remember the Holidays!

Fireplace Waltz

The wood goes into the fire
Twisted by knots and time
Weather beaten and bowed
Far from its previous fine

The future brighter than the past
By some though misunderstood
While giving itself to the flame
Its value much more than wood

Warmth to the home is brought
Light chases the gloom away
Comfort for the weary feet
Joy on a cloudy day

Losing its earlier form
No thought of prior faults
Consumed by the flames of love
Dancing the fireplace waltz

      Enya sings Silent Night

A homeless man waits, for the crosswalk light
Way back in his past, he gave up the fight

The cars keep turning, apathetically right
Alone he stands, with his blurring sight

Somehow I knew, it would all be alright
When Enya started, to sing silent night

My Country’s in pain, the troubles are deep
The old Uncle Sam, might die in his sleep

U hauls are packed, housings a fright
The people are moving, to nowhere in sight

I knew everything, would soon be alright
When Enya started, to sing silent night

Son home from college, just turned twenty one
Proud of the things, he’s learned and he’s done

He’s gone to Vegas, to see the bright sight
The lump in my throat, as he’s boarding his flight

I knew everything, would soon be alright
When Enya started, to sing silent night

My dear old Dad is losing the fight
He’s lived a long life, with all of his might

The future for him, is eternally bright
It’s me…that without him, faces the fright

But I know everything, will soon be alright
Enya , is singing her song silent night

Alone in my chair, the fire waving good night
All is peaceful now, I’m filled with delight

I know everything, will end up alright
Enya has sang, her sweet silent night

Notes:
I wrote this poem Christmas 2008. My two college age boys were home for the holidays and I think it was on a Saturday just before or just after Christmas. We had a fire in the fireplace, Darren was sleeping on the floor in front of the fire and Enya was playing in the CD player. She sings silent night in Hebrew and it’s one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard. Laying back in my chair wrapped in a blanket, I just remember thinking, everything is going to be alright. The poem was starting to gel in my mind when I needed to run down to the corner store for something. As I sat at the light, I saw the homeless man waiting for the light and those first few lines came to me. The other thing that was very real was my oldest going to Vegas to celebrate his twenty first birthday with friends. I couldn’t help but think of all the things a dad would worry about. I sent the poem to Enya but as yet have not heard back!

Week #35 Doorstep of Heaven

12/21/2017

I’m on the doorstep of heaven
The threshold of vast
Stars stretch out before me
Like future and past

The rocky-mountain view
The scented forest moon
Caress my city heart
Within its loving womb

The creamy milky way
Stretched out eternally
Inviting open space
Has also welcomed me

To this mountain heaven home
With sunrise granite glow
Its meadow of surprise
Few will ever know

The road ahead is clear
The joy is in the roam
Intoxicating pines
Of heaven’s doorstep home

Note:
This poem was inspired by our visit to Dave and Jean VanDenBerg’s home in Markleeville near Lake Tahoe. Watching falling stars in the night sky while lying in bed and arising to the sun exploding off the tops of the mountains. Amazing memories have been permanently etched.

Week#34 The Ornament

12/10/2017

The ornament of a meek and quiet spirit
Adorns the tree of life
Not for a season or a holiday
But for the span of eternal life

A pine tree will die as the season fades
Ornaments get put away
In a box up in the garage
For months they will stay

The ornament of a meek and quiet spirit
Is in style all year
It shines and sparkles
It’s value so evidently clear

Ornaments have meaning
To the one from whom they came
Special memento
To which we lay claim

Value the ones to which…
A meek and quiet spirit belong
It’s a valuable gift to enjoy
All the year long

Week #33 Real Men

12/10/2017

Great men are known
Are known by their work
When the going gets tough
They aren’t known to shirk

You can take their words
Take them to the bank
It’s not the bars on their chest
That gives them their rank

Towers of strength
With foundation of stone
Character lived and
Character shown

Kindness in the eye
Firmness in the walk
Strength in the grip
And truth in the talk

It’s always about you
Seldom about them
Off on an adventure
At the drop of a whim

The great men are made
But not made by self
Worth is not determined
By some plaque on the shelf

Their worth is given
By the one up above
The one who is mighty
Yet meek as a dove

I have known some great men
Some great men in my day
Who work for their respect
Who earn their day’s pay

They leave a trail of faith
Of courage and good will
Real men among us…
Who walk that trail still

Week #32 Backyard

12/10/2017

The peaceful dove sits on the neighbor’s roof
Shingles radiating heat and comfort
While water cascades down the fountain
And the blue jay seems aloof

Vapor trails painted in the sky
By unwitting planes
Among the temporary cirrus clouds
And distant whistles of trains

Sparrows call to order a meeting at the birdfeeder
Amongst the jasmine and bougainvillea
Twinkle lights strung from palms trees
Whose ignorant fronds
Have no idea

Pines reaching high and looking down
from their skyboxes
Sheltering their treasures
And various kit foxes

The crack of well-done almonds
The smell of island get-aways
Caress my rest
And amuse the flying jays

Week #31 Gray Matter

11/30/2017

What is crazy
What is sane
What constitutes
Gray matter
In the human brain?

Is it not being unsettled
Questioning it all
Wondering aloud
At the shooting star’s fall?

Complacency is stability
Or is it not?
Is the apple that falls
Not the one that will rot?

I think and I ponder
The deep and the vast
Envision the future
Question the past

Live in the moment
Think just a little
Question the depths
While wiping the spittle

Week 30 : Eyes

11/19/2017

Apathetic eyes
Look on the broken man
Carry on their way
He was not part of their plan

Another set of eyes
View the very same scene
Compassion and love
Bring comfort serene

One thinks…
“He got what he deserved”
On a downward road
The other’s heart opens
And kindness flowed

All eyes see
The very same state
Not all hearts care
Not all can relate

Do you see someone in need?
Do you have the things to give?
Do you see another bleed?
Do you help them to live?

The beaten man…
 …also has eyes
I was wrong…
Hear my cries…

I am sorry
Please forgive me
Deep in your debt
Anyone can see

Now open my eyes to let me see
The half alive in front of me
Give me compassion
Throughout my days
Let there be kindness
Found in my gaze
